Sun. April 20, Girls with Gears: A Women's Cycling Event, Limerick, PA. 5, 15, 25, 40, or 62 miles. Benefits Carol For Heart, Inc., founded in 2003 to eradicate women's heart disease through increased awareness and education to women and those in the medical community.

Sun. April 20, Miles For Matheny, Peapack, NJ. 12, 23, 32, 50 miles and "Hills of Attrition" route. Benefits Matheny Medical and Educational Center.

Sat. April 26 (rain date Sun. April 27), Pedal Delmarva, Berlin, MD. 21-100 miles on flat terrain. 100 rider limit, pre-registration only - no day-of-event registrations. Cue sheets will be provided, but roads will not be marked. This is a series of 8 rides, all starting from Berlin, to be held on the last Saturday of the month, from March to October.

Sat. April 26, Pennsylvania State Police Memorial Metric Century, Hershey, PA. 6, 15, 32, 37 miles, or combine for longer routes. Benefits the Pennsylvania State Police Historical, Educational and Memorial Center.

Sat. April 26, Tour de Carroll, Westminster, MD. 8, 36, or 63 mi. Benefits the Family and Children’s Adult Day Services (Carroll County’s only nonprofit organization offering medical day services to low-income seniors).

Sun. April 27, Ride On for Autism Research ("ROAR"), Oregon Ridge Park, Cockeysville, MD. Ride 10 or 25 miles. Benefits autism research at Kennedy Krieger Institute, 443-923-7300.

Sun. April 27, Rotary River Ride, Horsham, PA. 5, 20, 35, or 63 mi. Start from College Settlement Camp, 600 Witmer Rd (at the yellow blinker). Indoor facilities at start/finish. Benefits the Horsham Rotary, 215-674-9590.

May 2008 Bicycle awareness month/Bike to Work

May 2-4, Spring-n2-Cycling Weekend, Danville, PA. Includes meals and hotel accommodations. No route markings or SAG. Bicycle Club of Philadelphia (BCP)

Sat. May 3, Crankin for a Cure, Middletown, DE. There is one 25-mi loop which riders can do twice. This ride replaces the MS Mason-Dixon Ride. Delaware Chapter, National MS Society.

Sat. May 3, Farmlands Tour, Brookdale Community College, Lincroft, NJ. 18, 25, 38, 50, 62, or 100 miles on flat to gently-rolling terrain. Central Jersey Bicycle Club

Sat. May 3, Spring Bicycle Flea Market, Lehigh Valley Velodrome, Trexlertown, PA. $5 entry fee, open 8:30am-2:00pm. Shop early for the best selection. 610-395-7000

May 3-4, Face of America Ride, Bethesda, MD, to Gettysburg, PA, 110-mi one-way. A bike ride to honor, thank, and actively include servicemen who have been severely injured in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Ride side by side with the servicemen.

Sun. May 4, U.S. Air Force Cycling Classic, Crystal City, 1 Air Force Memorial Drive, Arlington, VA. This event brings together the Crystal City recreational ride, a UCI-sanctioned men's pro race, a NRC women's pro race, the inaugural U.S. Service Academy team time trials, and a kids' race. The Crystal City ride consists of up to 8 laps of the 12.5-km course.

Sun. May 4, Five Boro Bike Tour, New York, NY. 42 miles. 30,000 riders.

Sun. May 4, Great Green America Metric Century, Manheim, PA. Ride 30 or 62 miles starting from the grounds of the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire where the Great Green America Fest is being held. All cyclists will receive free admission to the Great Green America Fest.

Sat. May 10, SCU Quad County Metric, Green Lane Park, Green Lane, PA. Ride 21, 31, 45, 53, 68, or 76 miles on low-traffic back roads. The 21-mi route avoids the longest climb and is suitable for casual riders. The longer routes are on rolling to hilly terrain. The 53- and 76-mi routes include the 8-mi "Intensive Climbing Unit" extra-hilly segment with 1,200 ft additional climbing. A flat 10-mi ride on the unpaved Perkiomen Trail is also available. $20 (SCU members), $25 (non-members), by May 8. Registration on May 10 at Green Lane Park will be $20 (SCU members), $30 (non-members). Register online by April 27 or U.S. mail postmarked by April 23 to receive a free long-sleeve T-shirt. May 12 to 16th Bike to Work Week Try commuting to work for the whole week; see the road less traveled.

Sat. May 17, Bike to Build Charity Ride, Wilmington, DE. Ride 32 or 64 miles through New Castle County to Augustine Beach or Middletown, DE and back. Bike to Build is held in conjunction with the Wilmington Grand Prix, a professional cycling race and street festival. Benefits Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County.

Sat. May 17, Jerry Hanclich Pinelands Triple Loop, Batsto Village Park, Washington Twp., NJ. Ride one, two, or all three loops for a total of 28 to 100 miles on flat terrain. Each loop starts and ends at Batsto Village where food is provided. Register by 5/3 for free T-shirt. Shore Cycle Club.

Sat. May 17, The Rotary 100 Bike Tour, Burlington, NJ. 25, 50, 64, or 100 mi. Benefits the Burlington Rotary.

May 17-18, Coast The Coast MS Bike Tour, Monmouth University, West Long Branch, NJ. Ride 1 or 2 days; 25, 50, 85, or 170 miles. National Multiple Sclerosis Society

May 17-18, Ride for the Feast, Rehoboth Beach, DE, to Baltimore, MD; 140 miles, one-way. Benefits Moveable Feast, the only meal delivery program for homebound people living with AIDS in the greater Baltimore area. Register online

Sun. May 18, Bloomin' Metric, Norwalk, CT. Very scenic 25, 46, or 62 miles routes start out flat-rolling along the shore (Connecticut side of Long Island Sound). Longer routes go inland and up on rolling-hilly forested terrain, passing streams, waterfalls and a scenic lake (62-mile route only). Sound Cyclists Bicycle Club

Sun. May 18, Bonkers Metric, Ridley Creek State Park (parking lot #15), near Media, PA. Ride 18, 35, 50, or 65 scenic miles on the best roads in Delaware County. Rolling terrain with some hills. Delaware Valley Bicycle Club

Sun. May 18, Chester County Challenge for Cancer, West Chester, PA. 5, 10, 25, 50 or 63-mi loops through scenic, hilly Chester County. Benefits the Cancer Center of Chester County and Neighborhood Health Agencies, Inc. (Hospice).

Sun. May 18, Horse Farm Tour, McSherrystown, PA (near Hanover). Ride 10, 25, or 35 miles; combine loops for longer distance. Hanover Cyclers

Sun. May 18, Philadelphia Area Tour de Cure, Warrington, PA. 15, 40, 63 mi. Benefits the American Diabetes Association.

 

Wed. May 21, Ride of Silence. Various locations including Philadelphia and Allentown, PA. Join cyclists worldwide in a silent, slow-paced ride (max. 12 mph) in honor of those who have been injured or killed while cycling on public roadways.

May 23-26, Kent County Spring Fling, Chestertown, MD. Enjoy four days of cycling on the upper Eastern Shore with meals and lodging at Washington College. Ride 11-100 miles per day on flat to gently-rolling terrain. The Chestertown Tea Party Festival is within walking distance of Washington College and offers many non-bicycling activities for the entire family. Sat. June 7, Pedal to Preserve, Garden Spot High School, New Holland, PA. Ride 6, 20, or 51 miles through the heart of Lancaster County, offering up acres of unspoiled rolling farmland. Sun. June 15, Bike Freedom Valley, Lloyd Hall, One Boathouse Row, Philadelphia, PA. Flat routes: 8 mi on the river drives, 22 mi on the Schuylkill River Trail, or 44 mi into Valley Forge National Historic Park, with a few small hills in the park. More challenging routes: 35 mi to Villanova and Conshohocken, 50 mi to Villanova, Valley Forge National Historic Park, and Conshohocken, or 68 mi to Chester County. June 24-29, Tour of Pennsylvania (race). This spectator and volunteer event is the world's richest cycling race for elite international cyclists under age 25. This race will cover approximately 500 miles over six days, with finish-line events in Valley Forge, Harrisburg, Bedford, and the Laurel Highlands, and a race grand finale in Pittsburgh.

July 11-13, Maine Bike Rally and LAB National Meeting, Fryeburg, ME. The League of American Bicyclists (LAB) announced that the Maine Bike Rally will be the location of the L.A.B. National Meeting. The event will offer 30 on-road and off-road rides to choose from, 10-100 miles, with local ride leaders. Camping, food (including big breakfasts, picnic lunches, and all-you-can-eat dinner), all rides, entertainment, and a bike rally T-shirt are included in the affordable weekend price. 207-623-4511
