Ride of Silence
Miles: ~10 Pace: <12mph
Meet at the front steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Please join your
fellow cyclists, from the area, to support this national/global event. The ride will
take approx. one hour. There will be a Philadelphia Police escort. Be sure to
bring lights and wear reflective clothing. As always, a helmet is required. Here
is some information about the ride: In 2003, Chris Phelan organized the first
Ride Of Silence in Dallas after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit by the
mirror of a passing bus and was killed. On May 21, 2008, at 7:00 PM, the Ride
of Silence will begin in North America and roll across the globe. Cyclists will
take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or
injured while cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to
share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn't aware of these
rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves. The Ride Of Silence
is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph and remain silent
during the ride. There is no brochure, no sponsors, no registration fees and no t-
shirt. The ride, which is held during Bike Safety month, aims to raise the
awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to
the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for those who
have been killed or injured.

JUNE RIDES
Saturday June 14
Did you know that strawberries are the only fruit with seeds on the outside.
(discovered on the inside of a Snapple cap).
And did you know that Dr. Arnie Roseman, PhD, (with the able assistance of his
trusty, ill edumacated companion, Wildyugo), will be leading the Thirteenth
Annual Oley Valley Strawberry Ride from Daniel Boone Homestead. This great
ride usually is more of a sociable event rather than a ride, and a good reason to
eat strawberries, ice cream and cool whip. Be sure to look for the details in the
June issue of the Brandywine Pedaler.
